My name is Corey Drayton, and I have stage IV Cancer (T4 N2 Mx). I’ve been a globetrotting cinematographer and photographer, and for the last ten years have made my home in the Pacific Northwest where I’ve run a small production company, Wayfarer Films. Working in Motion Pictures placed me face-to-face with 20th century legends; Hunter S. Thompson, Werner Herzog… people possessed with singular vision, who’ve sounded their yawp over the rooftops of the world. Cancer has put me face-to-face with myself. The realities of treatment have forced me to the sidelines for a time. Not being one to sit idle, the immortal words of Teddy Roosevelt ringing in my ears, “GET ACTION! GET SANE!” I’m trying my hand at recording my combat with the carcinomic Gorgon. Before, I would never have dared to guess this lemon would make such

salubrious juice. Since I started putting pen to paper, many have shared that these candid writings have had positive impact on their own inner struggles, told me to keep writing and I’ve since become the scourge of pencils, jotting down every thought and every morsel of this experience. These scribblings needed a place to be gathered, and so Penumbra was born. I chose the name Penumbra, because the experience of cancer is one of limbo, of deep uncertainty. When facing cancer, one lives in the gray space between the darkness of nihilism and the sobering illumination of personal reflection. I don’t yet know where this project will go, but for a start, I do hope the accounts shared herein can do some good for other cancer patients, and their loved ones. Thank you for walking this path with me.
