Dining on Ashes: On the Death of Phil Solomon.

April 22, 2019 by Corey Drayton in Peripheral Events

There are moments in life where, what few words you have simply must claw their way out of you.  Late this evening, I received word that one of my instructors in film school, a man I’ve known nearly 20 years, who I’ve had the privilege of calling friend as well as teacher, a legend and an absolute mensch, Phil Solomon passed away Saturday.  I’m ashamed to admit that I’ve been so caught up in my battle against Cancer, and the destruction it’s wrought in my own life, that I took for granted that he and I would have a chance to talk before he died.  I was only just talking about him on Friday in the chemo ward, telling stories about this larger than life guy, and how he took a nihilistic 18 going on 40 kid like me and opened his eyes to the infinite.  Phil, I’m so sorry, old chap. Thanks for teaching me one final lesson:  That tomorrow is just too damn late.
